I want to love The Monster Squad movie, since it brings some of the most iconic characters ever made and brings them together, but it ultimately is just meh. The practical effects are good, and the movie clearly respects the Universal Monsters, and it has some fun sequences, like the one with the mummy and the car. The tone was uneven, though, and the writing was also just bad, and I was immediately turned off by the use of an offensive slur early on in the film, but I do have to admit, this movie has a ton of quotable lines. The movie also feels rushed, being way too short at only 82 minutes, and 73 minutes if you minus the opening and ending credits. It also feels like it's trying too hard and ultimately does too little. Overall, there's enjoyment to be had, but its flaws mixed with its strengths leave for a very uneven and unsatisfying watch.I want to love The Monster Squad movie, since it brings some of the most iconic characters ever made and brings them together, but it ultimately is just meh.
