This first third-ish of the movie awkwardly introduces our characters, takes a long time to do so, and interjects failing humour. It was a bit difficult to get my bearings of who knew whom and where allegiances lied. I paused the movie the moment things clicked and it was at exactly 37 minutes.
At this point, the film transitions into the action which is where the film soars. This is definitely some fine ass swordplay and strongly evoked the feeling like I was watching a dance of whirling steel. The footwork and strike placement/dodging was balletic, graceful and fluid.
As the film progresses, blessed with wuxia magic, we witness extreme melodramatic twists and arcs. I don't care as much for this, but by the time the film is over, the relationship between the two leads, Tsing and Chang, has evolved in a pretty bad ass way. The final fight knows how to turn up the dial to 11 at the perfect time.
