paranormal movies are often a hit or a miss for me; i typically prefer tangible horror to the ghostly and otherworldly. however, the gorgeous old manor and psychological elements of the changeling captivated me, and i knew i was going to like this movie before i was even 10 minutes through it.
despite it being a much different narrative, i was reminded of one of my favorite novels, daphne du maurier’s rebecca, while watching this film. an old manor, protagonists haunted by grief, someone who left the mortal realm before their time… there are definite similarities that caught my fancy. the mystery and general aura of suspense are also enticing and similar to rebecca. these aspects, along with the tragedies that occur in the changeling, made me appreciate the story much more than i do other ghost tales.
a rewatch of this film will definitely be in order in the future. i felt like the story dragged out a bit too long, but it’s possible i was just feeling tired while i was watching.
