this was surprisingly a fun watch, despite its low production value.

i think it has a solid plot, and it’s definitely engaging enough. the idea of a group of people just dancing on people’s graves and the ghosts coming back from the dead is a bit whacky, but also effective. i actually think the character are well built for the most part, and the atmosphere is genuinely scary as it’s enhanced by its sound and imagery of terrifying ghosts. this is tough around the edges, it offers a more niche horror experience but it’s quite predictable and somewhat underwhelming. but i can say it exceeded my expectations, as i wasn’t really expecting to enjoy it

Getting a different read from letterboxd ratings now, but I remember this as the one After Dark movie that was held up in defense of the series. The trailer looked bad so I didn’t seek it out at the time and I definitely wouldn’t have liked this when it came out. Getting the chance to see it years later, I have to say it’s pretty fucking good. They made a million of these in the years since but this is like proto-Blumhouse in a really charming way. It’s not slick enough for its dated style to be annoying and there’s a b-movie heart that’s not obnoxiously winking, so I find it threads a needle. Maybe it doesn’t stay away from silliness by the end but it’s mostly effective and always fun.
