I had high hopes but I’m still floored by My Man Godfrey, this is one of the best stories and scripts I’ve had the privilege of experiencing from the golden age and the acting all around, elevates it to a height I’ve rarely, if ever, seen one of these screwballs reach. The script feels similar to another film I loved that’d come out just a year after this in the Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland starring It’s Love I’m After and since that script remains one of the most genius comedic screenplays I’ve seen that only means great things what was achieved here. And again like It’s Love I’m After the comedy is blended with some of the most potent charm I’ve ever experienced in any movie and that’s due to the script too obviously but also this cast which was, to again and for the last time compare it to It’s Love I’m After, was a fantastic ensemble with everyone pitching in nicely. I’ve only seen William Powell in 3 movies including this, all of which I’ve only seen this year, but considering how amazing each movie was (this makes the third 4.5) and how great individually he was each time I’m more than comfortable saying he’s one of my favorite actors already. It’s not just Powell doing the heavy lifting here though as about everyone in the supporting cast, from smaller roles like Alice Brady’s, Jean Dixon’s, Mischa Auer’s, and Eugene Pallette’s to more instrumental parts like Gail Patrick’s and especially Carole Lombard’s everyone brought their own unique touch of charm to this and the result is something truly magnificent. I haven’t even mentioned it yet but the technical experience was also worthy of my rating, clean editing and nice shot composition all the way through tell this story as well as it could’ve been and I particularly liked the score from Charles Previn. I have a stressful day ahead and chose to watch this because I thought it’d lighten my mood and I was dead on, it’s a warm-hearted and wittily written screwball littered with great performances and a story that satisfies all the way through, if you’re a rom-com fan I really couldn’t recommend something better.
