Mike White’s a talented writer who seems to be at his best when exploring characters’ uncomfortable traits as opposed to their quirky ones. Peggy falls more into the ladder, in a 2000s indie mid-life crisis kind of way that we’re all supposed to relate to in a very general sense. Molly Shannon’s great and does her best, but the blandness of this choice really sets in long before she reaches any catharsis. This is definitely one of those movies where it felt like watching the color grey for an hour and a half. Nothing really terrible, just…a void mostly.
Also what was up with every other scene just kinda ending? Like most scenes in movies, you can notice peaks and valleys in the script with how they’re set up, almost like miniature short films that need to be thought of with how action fluctuates. Here, conversations just sorta end with no punchline or any proper lead in to what will occur next. I’d say it’s like mumblecore, but it’s way too scripted with Hollywood actors for that, which makes it more jarring. The editing’s probably also to blame, but I guess I nitpick or some shit.
