Quite an unexpectedly fantastic film. The Cold War really fascinates me so I when I found this film I was pretty excited to watch it. It’s a spy film without any glamour, espionage is portrayed as exhausting and morally taxing, the story follows a washed up agent (Alec Leamas played by Richard Burton) who’s sent on a complex mission to incriminate an opposition spy. It’s a very enthralling and intriguing story, not extravagant in the slightest and very brilliantly written. I really liked Leamas’ subtle decline into realising that all the ideological differences and patriotisms are futile, none of that really matters in the end, this thread is securely tied with the dire ending of the film. I very much enjoyed this film, the characters were wonderfully written and very well acted. Visually the film was very serious and minimal stylistically, with stark black and white contrasts that set the scene beautifully for a rather nihilistic film. Great stuff!!
