i didn’t like it as much as its spiritual successor, the great yokai war, but it wasn’t too far off! once again, the yokai look exceptional, especially for the 1960s. they’re full of personality and it was great seeing them have much more screen time this time around versus the first movie in the franchise. much recommended! :)

This was really fun! The puppets and makeup effects were at times kind of cool and at other times super silly in the best way. Even at its scant runtime, it kind of dragged a bit in the middle for me, but overall I had a great time.

While I still prefer the 2005 remake, mainly because of how much more outlandish and ridiculous it was, this movie is still so so enjoyable and way better than the first.

There are a TON of Yokai and they get more screentime than the humans this time which I love! They’re all enjoyable to watch, especially the Kappa. The Kappa in the remake was funny and all but in this movie he kinda steals the show for me. The guy who played him did a stupidly good job and gave him so much personality I love it. The villain Daimon is also much better than the one in the remake. He looks so cool and the movie wastes no time showing him off because he’s the first thing we see when starting it. The only thing about these costume designs is, maybe this was intentional idk, the eyes on the Yokai look so uncanny and creepy and trust me it’s even creepier when they’re in motion. I like it though because I feel like these movies just need to be a perfect blend of creepy but also funny and this movie achieves that.

The first movie was pretty mediocre and honestly felt more like a horror movie than anything but Spook Warfare takes everything wrong with the original, improves on all of it and makes a great movie for anybody to enjoy.
