The Man who Loved Yngve - I disagree politically, sexually, lyrically, but it’s still a great movie
The Man who loved Yngve is a movie released in 2008, directed by Stian Kristiansen, a Norwegian director. It follows a group of teenage boys who wants to start a rock band, and is awaiting their first concert. But Jarle (portrayed by Rolf Kristian Larsen), who is a group member, had a girlfriend, but a new boy starts at their school, Yngve (Ole Christian Ertvåg) and a lot of new problems arise, because of feelings.
The Man who loved Yngve was not a movie I expected to be golden, but I have to give props to my friend Julian, for recommending this movie to me, otherwise I wouldn’t have seen it. But I came out of the movie, and my mind was completely blown. I loved the movie, and I didn’t give a single score below 7, first of all, the concept has been touched on before, but not quite like this, which is original in itself. The movie was also pretty funny, as it was emotional.
And I really like that they filmed in Stavanger, a big surprise considering I live in the city right next! Sandnes, Norway. And even if I don’t like the lyrics in the soundtrack personally, it’s objectively good. And it was pretty consistent.
There are no «real» negatives, although there are a few. The lowest thing for me was the color, it felt too cold, too overexposed at parts. And the lighting felt pretty decent.
As a Christian, I don’t agree with all the topics in this film. But I managed to look over most of them, and still enjoyed it.
Overall? It’s a great Norwegian film, with superb performances, especially Ole Christian Ertvåg, which is by far one of the more realistic Norwegian performances I’ve seen. I recommend it, it’s a highly unique experience.
