I wanted to see Vincent Castle in his element and here he is. In a movie that feels so messy Castle is the only constant, showcasing an engaging performance that reflects the violent ego Jaques Mesrine likely had in real life.
However the rest of the film feels so raw, the narrative is too fast paced not allowing for any sort of character development or connections to be built with the characters or world. I would have loved to see Mesrine connect and be more inspired by the gangster lifestyle of 60s Paris before he quickly developed the cold blooded instincts to be a feared gangster himself. The quick, shaky cuts combined with the lack of dialogue as we move from scene to scene really holds this film back.
I can’t help but feel that a different director could have done a lot more with this…
