Q&A with Haruki Ryles and Max Johnson.
A mashup of video-game, anime, and action film influences. Whether intentional or not I was loving the Borderlands-esque aspects, the character introductions, the cult, the masks, the violence. Then I got real excited when Haruki Ryles mentioned JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure in the Q&A as an inspiration for the vibrant, changing colours, and the neon clouded skies. The action sequences are really well choreographed and extremely satisfying to watch unfold, each impactful hit and explosive shotgun blast results in buckets of blood. Genuinely funny and creative, insane what these guys accomplished on a budget of $3,000. The greatest moment was when Kruger was falling off the building and I lean over to Xander saying “Crank?” at the exact same time that Felix leans over to me saying the exact same thing, us Crank-heads are RAGING. Ran into Haruki in the elevator on opening night who said we should come, and here we are. 100% Pure Cinema.

given the resources this film had, this is a majorly impressive final product. more than anything, 100% pure rage’s crew shows their extreme promise with their creativity with those resources, dedication, and patience. the tactics used to create this film are crazy on paper and reminds me of 70s cinema or cinema produced in countries with less resources. it ignores the rules to get something made, and while the artist in me loves the concept of artistic freedom (to the best of one’s ability), the producer in me is SCREAMING. i dont envy finn, this looks like a logistical nightmare.
with all that out of the way, in terms of my thoughts on the film itself and it’s story, i was really pleasantly surprised. that sounds mean, but im mainly talking about my personal preferences when i say that— im just not an action movie fanatic. not that i dont enjoy action movies, but a movie with action in it doesnt inherently satiate me, it’s not what im looking for when i watch something. point is, this movie wasnt affected by my bias. the plot kept me guessing, the characters were distinct and fun to watch, and it contained a satisfying arc. of course, the filming method can sometimes really show in how the movie jumps from scene to scene, which affects the pacing and making it feel longer than it actually is, but it becomes less jarring as the film goes on.
