absurd, tasteless - even for the standards of john waters. i simultaneously hated and loved it, rating it in a standard star system is nearly impossible. i would both understand why someone would give this a half star, and also five stars. its just so terrible - but its like a complete train wreck, you can’t really look away. it just felt like a parody of 2000s gross-out comedies. the characters are all caricatures, there’s cgi squirrels, orgies and a cult of sex addicts. it’s not really as funny as a lot of his other films, but it’s just so absurd you’ve got to at least smile at his effort, and his insane thought process. it feels less smart than his prior films, the humour seems to revolve around sex - which can get tiresome after a while. it’s truly hard to put this in words, it’s more of an experience rather than a movie. i honestly really reckon in about a decade, this will be reclaimed as an absurdist masterpiece. it’s probably his worst feature-length film, and definitely the one that gets the most hate, mainly because it barely even feels like john waters. i didn’t hate it, but im probably not rushing to watch this again any time soon.

A Dirty Shame feels like John Waters spent an afternoon on the Urban Dictionary and con-cock-ted (heh) a script using all the obscure acts of sexual deviancy he could find…and then some! 

Tracy Ullman goes all out as Sylvia Stickles who, after a blow (heh) to the head, becomes a sex addict under the tutelage of tow truck driver / erotic Jesus allegory Ray Ray (Johnny Knoxville). Sylvia’s husband Vaughn (Chris Isaak) tries to understand, while daughter Caprice (Selma Blair) is already a converted disciple of Ray Ray, shaking her N cup implants on the regular at the local biker bar. 

The good folk of Harford Road in Baltimore, want this riff raff out of town, forming a neuter society to combat the dirty degeneracy on display.

Ullman and Blair go pretty hard (heh) and the low brow 50s and 60s exploitationer elements are fun, such as the montage of burlesque and nudie reels and / or weird Easter picnic footage whenever someone take a blow (heh again) to the head. And the subliminal use of sexual terminology that pop up (heh) on screen are pretty hilarious as is the soundtrack of double entendre novelty songs.  The cgi squirrels I could do without. Shit I forgot to make a nuts (heh) reference. 

By the this arrived on the screen, the raunchy 90s sex comedy was already in full effect, so this felt a little old hat and dare I say it repetitive. That being said dropping an upper decker is still a damn site pervier than fucking a pie. 

The NC-17 rating resulted in a poor box office showing and sadly Waters hasn’t made a feature since, although there is still hope we one day will see Liarmouth adapted with Aubrey Plaza in the lead.
