Song Sung Blue tells the true story of popular Neil Diamond tribute band, ‘Lightning and Thunder’, consisting of married couple Mike and Claire Sardina. Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson star in this touching biopic on the tragic lives of Mike and Claire.
There’s not a lot that make this film stand out, except for Hudson’s performance, which got her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. She gained 15 lbs. for the role, and you can feel the passion she brings to this role. Jackman is great as always, and like I mentioned before, the story is touching, but it doesn’t make this film a masterpiece. It feels more like a movie my parents would pick out on a family movie night. I don’t think I need to elaborate any further on what that means.
It’s interesting to note that the children from Mike’s side were extremely unhappy with the final product, while Claire and her children thought the film was great. Mike Jr. was frustrated that they never mentioned him in the film, only his sister and step-siblings. I understand his frustration, but calling Jackman and Hudson “monsters” shows that his anger is out of selfishness, rather than caring about how his father’s legacy is portrayed.
