A criminally underrated, truly bleak drama with incredible performances from Sean Penn and Christopher Walken. They are incredibly believable as a father and son, which is kind of funny because they are only 17 years apart in real life. There are long stretches of the film without dialogue, only filled in by Patrick Leonard’s haunting synth score, making the quieter moments feel much more unsettling. The frequent use of “Live to Tell” (by far the best Madonna song in my opinion) doesn’t hurt the heartbreaking tone. I really wish this film were more well-known, so I implore you to see this one ASAP. It’s an underrated gem.
