As much as I love the annualization of this franchise, I am feeling some deja vu from a year ago as I write this review, for I have the exact same (oddly specific) take: the first segment, a maternity-themed haunted house jaunt, is fantastic, but the rest of the collection ranges from disappointing to dizzying.
I think the big letdown this year are the uninspired settings. I mean, the Halloween theme does narrow the options a bit, and the budget is always low, but I think there was a lot of imagination left on the table. One segment follows a group of young adults sucked into a vengeful “only take one” candy bowl, and where do they end up? Some nightmarish hellscape or demonic candy land? Nah, a warehouse.
By the time the settings start getting interesting again (in the final segment), I’m getting too dizzy. Is that the fault of the film? I’m not sure exactly sure, but as long as the series keeps delivering at least one good segment, I’ll be back every October to get dizzy again!
