Shortbus isn't suppose to make you horny, there is sex, lots of dicks, some cum, and unsimulated sex scenes but it is presented as an ordinary thing, there isn't cheesy acting, the characters are fleshed out, and it's intentionally hilarious. John Cameron Mitchell's film isn't afraid to show sex but it doesn't come across as explicit, it feels as normal as going to the bathroom, it's apart of the characters lives and in contrast, our lives. In a way like In the Realm of the Senses, which is hilariously referenced in this film, the actors take pride in their enjoyment, adding their own character to an improvised story, and it come across as so naturally.
