Breaker Morant is one of the better courtroom dramas I’ve seen and possibly the greatest Australian film I’ve seen, although choices are limited. Breaker Morant oozes Stanley Kubrick’s Paths of Glory with gorgeous technicolor cinematography. With only 11k viewers on Letterboxd, I think it’s safe to say Breaker Morant is a hidden gem.

Breaker Morant is one of the better courtroom dramas I’ve seen and possibly the greatest Australian film I’ve seen, although choices are limited. Breaker Morant oozes Stanley Kubrick’s Paths of Glory with gorgeous technicolor cinematography. With only 11k viewers on Letterboxd, I think it’s safe to say Breaker Morant is a hidden gem.

Beautiful cinematography paired with expert editing makes a very dull looking courtroom really stand out, and the outdoor shots are great. The Criterion restoration work done on this one is really incredible. Only knock really is the little bias towards the Aussies. I think they showed Breaker too much in a positive light. This is sort of balanced with the flashbacks I showing him fueled with vengeance but not enough. All the music being diegetic as well is very cool. The prison attack is also a bit over the top with them whipping out a machine gun out of nowhere in like 5 seconds. It’s a bit surprising that this has less than 10k watches on LB hopefully it gets a bump as this film is great.
