Amitabha Roy is a Calcutta-based scriptwriter, driving around in the country to collect material for a film. His vehicle breaks down in a small town. A tea planter, Bimal Gupta, offers hospitality for the night. Amitabha is forced to accept the offer as he has no alternative.

Satyajit Ray once again proves that he truly is a master of his craft. He perfectly uses the 70 min bitesized format, as an intentionally brief encounter. Hes really good at creating instantly charming and interesting characters, which he especially proves in this. He shows how effectively he can introduce a trio of well written and interesting characters, in just 70 mins.
