kevin conroy voicing batman already gives this a lot of credit because he’s one of the best to ever do it, but this was such a strange watch because it’s six different stories and they all work in completely different ways. one thing i’ll say straight away is that the environments were amazing in every single one. genuinely not one of them had a mediocre background or atmosphere. all of them looked fucking incredible.
the first story didnt do much for me at all. the animation wasnt the best, the batman design wasnt the best, and the plot was just mediocre. i do like when people treat batman almost like a supernatural thing even though he’s literally just a guy in a costume, but besides that, i wasnt really feeling it.
crossfire was much better, probably top three out of the six. the story was decent, the batman design was solid, and i really liked the fire, the action, the shots, and the intensity of it. field test, the one with the golf ball and the magnetic shield, had one of the stronger plots, but i hated both the batman and bruce designs. the idea was nice, everything else not so much.
in darkness dwells probably had the best animation, environment and atmosphere, but the story felt too short and too simple. in theory it could have been the best one, but it just didnt give me that feeling, and the batman design was awful. working through pain was easily my favourite. the whole thing with bruce volunteering, learning from cassandra how to hold back pain, and the dynamic between them was amazing. i hated bruce’s design here, genuinely awful, but batman himself looked very good. i also loved the part with him gathering the guns and being shocked by how many there were, like he still didnt fully grasp how far crime had gone.
deadshot is the one i dont fully know how to feel about. i liked the animation and i really enjoyed deadshot himself, but the characters looked like they belonged to a different style than the backgrounds, which threw me off. i loved the batman design though, especially the eyes. it combines normal eyes with the white lenses, and somehow you can still see emotion through them. i’ve never seen that anywhere else and it looked incredible, even if it probably wouldnt work in real life. bruce’s design was still bad though, the mouth and face were just off.
overall, working through pain was definitely my favourite story, but the others had their own strengths too, whether that was animation, atmosphere, batman design, or just being fun like the golf one. messy as a whole, but really interesting.
