Mr Nobody Against Putin is one of those documentaries that leaves you rattled, impressed, disturbed, and a little conflicted all at once.
First off, it’s undeniably well made. The access is astonishing, and some of the moments captured are genuinely horrifying. Watching the machinery of state propaganda seep into classrooms is stomach-turning. The film does an effective job of showing how normalization happens in real time.
I sincerely hope that Pavel Talankin is going to be alright after taking such a massive gamble. In the current climate, exposing this kind of system isn’t just brave, it’s dangerous (especially considering what happened to Awdah Hathaleen last year).
That said, I find it quite problematic how the film doesn't acknowledge that this cycle of propaganda has existed for decades instead acting like it is a new thing, glorifying pre-2022 Russia.
And while the footage is powerful, the pacing drags. It feels noticeably longer than its runtime.
Still it’s a gripping and often terrifying watch. It’s a documentary that matters.

What a brave film! Probably hit me a lot harder than other people purely because of the emotions of being a teacher, making a safe fun space for young people and seeing them grow up. All under the backdrop of Russian war and propaganda Ofc.

Another important film on the Russia/Ukraine conflict for different reasons as we look at how the war affects the lives of Russians. We must always remember the power and influence of propaganda and the subjugation of conscription, and the human toll paid on all sides.

I came back after reading the other reviews and you guys are dickheads. Just because it beat your favorite thing for the Oscar doesn’t mean it isn’t great. 

“Just another anti-war movie” Yes, we still need anti-war movies because we are still starting new wars. Have some common sense guys. It’s a documentary about the state of common society amid the Russo-Ukrainian War. I don’t care if you feel like you didn’t learn anything new from it. You did. You saw stories of real people being affected by a government they have no control of. That will always be valuable, even if you are just talking to a neighbor across the street. 

This film is human and well made. There are things that it could improve on, but fundamentally on what it is showing and saying, it is a strong piece of art.
