How did this movie launch a franchise??
Charles Bronson is occasionally fun on screen but doesn’t do well with emotional scenes. I have liked him in supporting roles so I was hoping he could do more to anchor a movie, but let me down in this case.
I found the directing quite good, the whole movie felt gritty and scary. I was impressed by the tone this movie strikes, and the scary neighborhood it created.
The politics of this movie were very distasteful in my opinion. I try to give a star rating based on the quality of the film and not my moral objections, but it was hard to separate in this case. He is shooting to kill anyone committing petty crime and becomes a folk hero for it. This isn’t Batman trying to save people, he’s literally shooting them to kill, often chasing them down after to make sure they’re dead. I was waiting for the Taxi Driver morality question of whether what he was doing was right or wrong but we seem to be celebrating his behavior. This movie could have been legendary if his actions were called into question.
We also take a 15 minute business trip with him to Tucson that has nothing to do with the central plot. You get to see him plan a housing development. Why?
