❝What is it to be human? What is it to die? To live? And... what is love?❞

I have mixed feelings about this film. It's a creative adaptation of one of the most famous plays in history, and it has its moments, but there's a lot that could be improved as well. Visually, it's absolutely stunning, featuring a vibrant colour palette and beautifully drawn backgrounds, as well as some great 2D animation. I really like the mix of the fantasy genre with a medieval aesthetic courtesy of the setting and characters from 'Hamlet', and the Otherworld and Infinite Land have some incredible landscapes. However, the story has a few major issues; there are glaringly obvious plot holes, some characters have confusing development, and the whole future mixing with the past concept doesn't work and is wholly unnecessary. The film is just shy of two hours long, and yet it feels like much longer because the pacing stretched the plot as thin as possible, and by the time the ending rolled around it just felt anticlimactic. I also didn't like Scarlet much as a protagonist, and none of the other characters had enough of a personality to make a lasting impression. The voice-acting was done well, though, and I liked the soundtrack, too. On the whole, I have to say I'm a little disappointed with Scarlet, especially since I loved Belle (Mamoru Hosoda's previous film) so much; if you want a 'Hamlet' adaptation, just go watch The Lion King instead.
