this is so great, it's absolutely hilarious (for good reasons) and incredibly enjoyable. It obviously doesn't line up with the actual show for a plethora of reasons but it's real good fun. Mr Inbetween is quite a lot better -- this works well as a concept / early stage idea. Was grinning ear to ear the entire time, the sarky banter between Ray & Max was a riot.
I don't even like found footage much but this was great.

Makes me want to rewatch Mr Inbetween !!!

When Ray forces his victims into following his direction, they begrudgingly go along with a semi-confused look dampened by the vague understanding that resisting arrest would be a poor choice. Audiences watch The Magician, equally semi-confused, with a vague understanding that resisting the film would also be a poor choice.

There is a lot that I love about this movie. The editing is non-chronological, surrounding a plot based on two interactions; one with a man who Ray is forcing to leave town, another with a man Ray has been tasked to kill. Because of this bare-bones plot, the jump-cut editing creates a style of storytelling that surrounds the character of Ray and the environment which defines him, rather than a story based on it’s events. Mockumentary works perfectly, as well. Ray and his cameraman, as well as those around them, slowly become more comfortable with each other, allowing us to peer into the perspectives of Australia’s criminal underworld. Drug dealers, hit men, and thieves are reduced from their fearsome status to laymen through the almost unscripted dialogue. The comedy is perfect: dry as a bone but clearly intentional. Much of it relies on hypotheticals about eating bowls of feces or the gay community, but it is always punctuated with a jarring reminder that this is a film about crime. Benny’s last words allude to him using his jacket to wipe his ass, only for him to then be shot mercilessly - to which Max, our cameraman, calmly replies “ah.”

It prompts a discussion of the dangers of drugs, the ethics of criminality, and the dark underbelly of modern society. Benny’s murder is justified by Ray - he explains that a death without suffering or fear is greater than a death with them, given that the death itself was inevitable. When a title card eulogizes Benny’s death, however, it reads:

It is not a critique of the criminals. It is a critique of the societal forces that produce them. Legalization of hard drugs, with the intention of therefore reducing crime, was a massively progressive stance to take in 2004. The notion that these low-level criminals would be remotely relatable is an incredible perspective, and I believe that Scott Ryan has an awe-inspiring ability to critically analyze that which plagues much of our modern society.

The film is very funny. It is edited and shot exactly how it should be. Most of all, it tackles dense, dark themes in a way that, as far as I know, has never been done before. It aptly deserves it’s cult status, and should very well be recognized as a hidden gem that, at all costs, should not be resisted.

Love me an actually good & fun low-budget movie. Less is more with the magician. The natural acting with just the right amount of fun banter and philosophies makes Scott Ryan's work so appealing and enjoyable.
