in an industry that has long profited from problematic representations of muslims, this film does the opposite. instead of reducing muslim characters to stereotypes or plot devices, it talks about the real issues muslims face in india, particularly muslim women. women who are disregarded by hindu nationalists and often silenced or controlled by men within their own communities. and while i’m not putting this film on a pedestal, because this is the bare minimum, and representation like this should have existed long ago. it still sends an extremely important message to bollywood and the audience about whose stories are worth telling and how they should be told. inspired by real-life events that have occurred and continue to occur daily, the film feels realistic rather than merely spectacle.

it’s one of the strongest bollywood releases in recent years mainly because it prioritizes intent over excess. there are no distractions, it was genuinely engaging. it’s unfortunate that this is another one of those typical examples of actually good bollywood movies not getting enough theatrical attention. i wasn’t even aware of this until today.

while, ive never really enjoyed any of yami gautam’s films. she deserves all the praise she’s receiving for this one. this is easily her career best performance. she was unreal and fully embodied the character of shazia bano. of course, this isn’t a typical emraan hashmi film since there are no item songs. he delivers a solid performance as well.
