"Would you still love me if I was a fish?"
ChaO follows Stephan, a human engineer, and ChaO, a mermaid princess who suddenly crashes into his life and turns it upside down. What follows is a colorful, chaotic romance between two people from completely different worlds trying to figure out whether love can survive misunderstanding, prejudice, and one very confused man.
The animation is absolutely insane. Every frame feels alive. Every color pops. Every sequence was just the weirdest, prettiest thing imaginable. It's actually flabbergasting.
Half the time I genuinely had no idea what was happening. The other half I was too busy staring at the visuals to care.
Now... let's talk about Stephan. My bro literally fumbled. ChaO crossed literal oceans for you. She learned your world. She learned your culture. She endured people judging her. She loved you with her whole heart. And what did you contribute exactly???
Because from where I'm sitting, Stephan spent a significant portion of this movie being weirdly prejudiced toward merfolk and acting like ChaO was the problem.
Like sir. YOU are dating the fish princess. Maybe stop acting surprised every five minutes.
The romance is cute, but I spent most of the movie thinking ChaO deserved better.
That being said, the film is so charming that I couldn't stay mad for long. The story can be messy, rushed, and all over the place, but there's something strangely lovable about it. It feels like a fairy tale someone made up on the spot and somehow animated into existence.
Is it perfect? Not even close. Did I still have a great time? Absolutely.
ChaO may have been about a human falling in love with a fish. But somehow I ended up falling in love with the fish too.
