i’ve been meaning to log this one for ages - a john waters classic that is the perfect border between the complete trash, underground ‘pink flamingoes’ and the more mainstream ‘hairspray’. it’s not too abstract/odd, but it also has a really edgy, offbeat atmosphere about it. when looking at john waters entire filmography, i don't really why i wanted to watch this above everything else, maybe because i’d seen some of his later stuff, and also seen his early stuff: so it was nice to look for one just inbetween, and it didn’t hurt that divine was the lead (you know it’s gonna be a good movie, when he’s in it). it’s a great satire/parody of suburban movies of the 50s: with the completely overblown drama, as a mother has a useless husband, who divorces her for a younger woman: and her two children, one deemed ‘criminally insane’ as his obsession on stepping on shoes, and her daughter who hangs out with the wrong crowd and participates in unprotected sex, and it also kinda mocks the hypocrisy of family values. divine is easily the glue structuring this movie, his performance as mother francine fish is both overtly camp, but he shows versatility with some scenes being generally powerful, as she battles with binging, alcoholism and family life completely falling apart. it’s easily one of the favourite things of his i’ve watched, probably just being a second to the endlessly iconic and controversial ‘pink flamingos’. the humour is unhinged, but weirdly comforting. the characters are bizarre, dialogue is insane and the vibe is just totally surreal: a must watch waters film.
