Blue Mountains, or Unbelievable Story is the greatest satirical take on the Soviet Union in Georgian and in whole Soviet cinema. Plus, it's one of my favorite films of all time :)
Blue Mountains, or Unbelievable Story is an amazing take on Soviet bureaucracy and how it’s not at all what it seems. In the film, we meet characters who always seem to be late, busy, or “working.” They never have time for anyone, even though we never actually seem to see them working. It's a place where everybody is working, but nothing seems to get done.
This tackles a classic stereotype of socialism where workers all around the world unite for great changes, and this exact film is an amazing middle finger to socialist stereotypes. It brings us such a comfort to believe that we are actually doing something anything like me writing this review instead of studying chemistry. It’s more comfortable for us to live in a society where we see people working, even if nothing gets done and it’s all an illusion.
The film also tackles Soviet nostalgia, which is very relevant in all post-Soviet countries. In the very end of the movie, we see the whole building burning down, but people still go in to save that picture of well Blue Mountains. I think this cult classic should be more known in Western society we see so many films, and great films, about capitalism and how it’s destroying us. The director did an amazing job at making the film insanely funny. That was the only way it wouldn’t be restricted and censored by Soviet laws.
