Wow this is beautifully animated! I could just stare at so many scenes, especially the action sequences. There is some killer sword fights with some badass choreography.
I haven't seen much anime but my biggest surprise was all the insane mythology this movie throws at you! From assassins with impenetrable rock-skin, killers who literally hide in the shadows, and a dude who controls bees and whose body actually houses a hive! Bonkers but it totally works.
My biggest issue with Ninja Scroll is with Kagero's character. She is a kickass warrior in her own right and is unaffected by poison - but then they throw in this insane ability for her to take away the poison from Jubei's body if she allows him to have sex with her... but before this anyone else would have died of poisoning for it? Not only does it make no sense based on the lore that has been established and feels like the only reason the writers changed this was for her to sacrifice herself for Jubei, the male protagonist, and build in an unnecessary love story. Every woman, no matter their badassery, lives a cruel existence in this misogynistic world, but hers feels even more tragically written. It could have been handled a lot better.
I give this 3.5 ninja stars
