When I first watched this, it really stuck with me. It's just a silly Justin Lin flick, but something about it really hits.

I think modern Asian American movies irritate me. American media wants to hear about POC struggle, so you're only going to get funding if you make a Past Lives, or The Farewell, or Didi, where being Asian makes you 'othered' and sad. Most of y'all grew up in Vancouver or SoCal, no WAY all this is true to your experience.

I love Better Luck Tomorrow because it's an Asian American movie where they're just doing things, but they're also Asian. The characters have crushes, get in trouble, fight, laugh, but in ways where them being Asian makes things more exciting - it's not informing some deeper trauma. We get to use race to add something POSITIVE to the characters for once. Asians don't have to feel sad because the cool kids made fun of their lunch, they can BE the cool kids and commit crimes and get into trouble.

MC Hammer funded this movie, and it's the only movie of its kind today. No way this gets made in the big 2025.

Been working my way through the Fast and Furious franchise and remembered that this was retroactively an origin story for one of the characters. I was truly bummed after watching the fourth film in the series (confusingly titled Fast and Furious) because it gave up on the saturated and dynamic visuals of the first three entries. Better Luck Tomorrow handsomely sated that desire for more visually inventiveness and style. It’s very clearly indie, but Justin Lin had so much sauce that, despite the limited budget, he was able to make this a tight and cool small scale crime story.
