This movie really doesn’t hold any of its punches and doesn’t glorify war at all. This really shows the brutal reality on what the soldiers in the trenches thought the Great War was gonna be like and contrasting that thought with the brutality of the battles in the trenches. Seeing Paul go from a cheerful boy looking forward to fight for his country to a man who has seen it all and will never recover from his experience in the Great War was heartbreaking knowing that there was millions of Pauls who had no idea what was the reality of war. This movie was really good and I’ll definitely check out the 2022 remake soon to compare and contrast both adaptations.

This was a really impressive technical feat and a very powerful statement on the brutal futility of war. I can’t say I enjoyed this picture, because I just don’t enjoy war movies (especially WWI movies) but it was an extremely well-done movie for what it was. I was especially impressed by the editing. There was some really interesting artistic choices made within the edit. I’m glad that I watched it, but I don’t think this will be one I will revisit much if at all. It is a rough watch.
