Unique amateur style I haven’t seen much of. It made certain shots feel more raw, if that’s even the right word. But that style being carried over to the story itself was kind of bland. Not bad but not great either.

First Watch. You can really see some of the groundwork for Kelly Reichardt’s style being laid here. The slow burn, the natural and cozy colour palette, the careful shot composition and blocking — it’s all present. The narrative feels wider than the open road in front of the characters, yet remains intimate and closely studied. Reichardt explores people’s lives and the dynamics they create for themselves, dipping her toes into genre filmmaking but never enough to trap the film in rigid motifs.
You can absolutely tell she adores early Malick; Badlands and Days of Heaven have their fingerprints all over this film.
It’s certainly rough around the edges, but there’s a lot of hard work being established and explored in River of Grass and it pays off to some really impressive rewards, especially for a debut.

-having the viewer mind changed after
