Wow David Lean seriously has to be one of the best directors ever. He captures human emotions so magnificently! I still have yet to see Lawrence of Arabia or Bridge on the River Kwai but I very much plan on watching them! I adored his tragic forbidden love story in Brief Encounter and I admired the story of Great Expectations which he adapted from the Charles Dickens's novel. The film is so interesting as it focuses on class divisions. Pip is a blacksmith's son, someone who's not very well off but he finds himself surrounded by people of higher class. He eventually gets an opportunity to become higher class but he wonders why he was given the chance. It's also interesting when she comes into money he neglects those former figures in his poorer upbringing. He later learns that true worth isn't determined by wealth and status but by character and loyalty. The romantic relationship with Pip and Estella was so interesting. Pip grows to admire Estella but she's very distant and closed off and very aloof. Estella isn't easy to open as Pip is. Ur falls for her but she's not willing to be with him. In a sense it's initially a kind of requited love. The setting of this film is gothic in a way and haunting but not entirely. The first few scenes with the convict, or Miss Havisham's house or the later scenes with the convict are truly gothic in picture but the film isn't entirely like that but just still amazing. I thought the entire cast was amazing with John Mills and Valerie Hobson being amazing. Admittedly I was so surprised to know that was even Alec Guinness. And also let's give it the 17 year old Jean Simmons who despite being in a small fraction of this film managed to make an impression on the viewer. The film was directed and shot perfectly and the music at times was amazing!
