There was a lot of intrigue in my head at this one when I heard about it during its theatrical run. A Tubi director making a theatrical film? And it getting the exact reception one would expect it to get? What would I do, NOT watch it?
Well, I didn’t see it during its theatrical run. As intrigued as I was, $13 a seat seemed like a risk. Thankfully, it ended up where it probably should have wound up in the first place and here we are today.
Now, I can’t say I don’t see why Run got a bad rap among the theater-going crowd; it’s not a big theatrical film, and it’s a bit misleading for the first half an hour or so. You see the alien on the poster. You would assume the aliens would show up sooner. They don’t, aside from the whole “mysterious thing kills man” trope. Now, what you do get is a woman canceling her wedding and her girlfriends going “that’s okay! let’s do a girls weekend!” - and frankly they should have just gone the other way. Present it as a girls trip style movie gone wrong. Then you might have some satisfied viewers. But not even that could probably save this film.
I find it interesting that the aliens have a pretty explicit if not stupid weakness - “using the light on your smartphone and shooting them in the head,” as the President of the United States says in a press conference - but that I can’t recall any character flat out trying it on screen. There’s a lot of discussion about it, and a glorified extra gets killed while talking about it, but for the life of me either I missed it somehow or it never got used. Very baffling. What’s even more baffling is that we see no military action; it’s all told to us, and we see some fighter jets, but no indication that we’ve gotten our asses kicked until the President says “fuck it, we’re bombing everyone.” Even more baffling.
And I don’t want to say anything like that. It’s slow at the times it’s not being stupid, but Chris Stokes is a director with 25+ years under his belt. He clearly knows a shot and he’s not an idiot. He may (allegedly) be a pervert, but he’s not a filmmaking moron. So what is holding Run back from actually being genuinely entertaining? And of all films - why is this a top contender for worst of 2025? There are a lot of shitty movies. Maybe the people who are calling it need to see those, or maybe I’m just overexposed to them and when I see a shot that’s not shaky or audio that’s not echoey I go “ooo!” and clap my hands like I’m stupid. Massively… overhyped in the opposite direction of what is usually overhyped? I guess that’s how I could put it. Would have been immediately forgotten if it went straight to streaming.
