Shanghai Blues is a masterfully crafted film, even by today’s standards. Its lighting, color palette, and compositions are meticulously thought through and brought to life by excellent camerawork. It is a beautiful film to watch. Entertaining, funny, and a comedy whose humor largely still holds up today with wonderful written characters represented by an amazing cast.
There is, however, one big exception which made the experience less enjoyable: the use of sexual harassment (and rape????) for a comedic purpose. This aspect has aged poorly and is the only element that makes the film less enjoyable – which is sad because this could have easily been one my favourite comedies.
