Guys this is actually a beautiful movie I think I was so pissed off at the plot the first time I watched it I refused to see anything good about it. Upon rewatch i think it’s more of a cautionary tale than anything else and I think it was a pretty nuanced depiction and doesn’t glorify cheating like I previously thought. Everyone involved (minus Riya, cuz she’s a perfect angel baby) was unlikeable in some way and it made us understand (not condone) how something like this could happen. I was never too sure how I felt about the ending before but now I kinda like it, they did a terrible thing but they don’t deserve to be unhappy for the rest of their lives because of it. More than anything else I hope Riya has the best life ever and gets everything she could ever want and lives happily ever after cuz she was by far the best character and in my eyes the only innocent person in this whole ordeal.
An additional note: I really liked the way that Riya and her mother in law were portrayed, it’s not the typical desi mother in law, daughter in law relationship and you could tell they both really cared for each other. I also really appreciated that Riya is not portrayed to be a bad mother (by anyone other than Dev but he is just saying that cuz of his tiny bruised ego), I think it would’ve be really easy to portray her as a terrible mother because of her ambition especially for the time this was made but instead you can tell she’s a good mother, just busy, and she has dreams and aspirations which this movie frames as a positive thing (to me atleast).
