Admittedly I think the weakest part of First Sunday isn’t the acting or the story or any purported imbalance of comedy and drama or any of that; it’s just too rushed. Like at times I couldn’t help but think that this film isn’t letting moments breathe or elaborating a little more on what happens. A deacon is revealed to be stealing money, but we don’t see the consequences of that (I assume he becomes an upstanding member of the Republican Party in the future).

There’s a great scene where Tracy Morgan’s character talks about not knowing his birthday that, if written to breathe, would present itself as a really great and touching scene, something that paces itself in a way that is reminiscent of scenes from great or even average films from decades prior; it still is touching, no matter what, but it is so obviously missing something. Aside from that, and some scripting issues that make this feel more Lifetime at times than medium budget, I actually had a nice time watching this one.

I didn't know what a Deacon was until I had watched this movie for the first time years ago. I wasn't planning on revisiting it again today, but it popped up on my Netflix as a recommendation, so I just had to give it another watch. It's simple, but I love it. This era of Ice Cube was something different, every one of his movies, bad or good, are a great watch, and the more serious moments (namely Lee John's birthday), we're really well done. Is it amazing? Probably not. Is it even all that funny? No not really, I mean I didn't laugh out loud. But is it a fun time? Absolutely.
