This is both good and bad. I appreciate what it’s doing, but in my opinion it doesn’t seem to know whether it wants to be a remake or a sequel. I suppose it is a requel, but I just don’t really like how it’s sort of a continuation of the Christopher Reeve Superman films and it sort of isn’t? It’s just confusing. Also, there were a number of moments that were obvious homages to the original Superman movies including lines straight up from them. I understand that Bryan Singer was excited to make this (to the point that he dropped X-Men 3 to make this instead) but come on man it gets to a point. Speaking of Singer, fuck him and fuck Spacey. I don’t care if Spacey gives a good performance as Lex, he’s just as evil as Lex!! Plus, GENE HACKMAN IS BETTER!! Anyway, this movie is just okay. It’s safe. It doesn’t do anything extraordinary, yet it doesn’t do anything overtly bad. For the most part, I enjoy the action sequences, the progression of the plot, and the ending, but some things just don’t sit right with me. I honestly don’t really like Brandon Routh’s Superman nor do I like Kate Bosworth’s Lois Lane. They both seem boring in a way. The writing definitely doesn’t help, but Routh is so focused on trying to channel his inner Christopher Reeve that he fails to add his own uniqueness to the character. The whole relationship between Lois and Superman in this is also really weird. I didn’t like seeing Clark/Superman stalking her and then the fact that he left her and just randomly returned. And they have a son?? His excuse that he had to see if Krypton was still there was so lame too. I really think this should’ve just been a full on remake instead of trying to somehow make this a strange sequel thingy. But for what it is, it’s not entirely bad. Parts of this really shine, while other aspects drag it down. It’s neither here nor there, its simply okay.
