i've been reading a book about the donner party (michael wallis's the best land under heaven, which is super good!) and this was lowkey the best companion piece. westward expansion and manifest destiny and capitalist accomplishment comes hand in hand with white supremacy and murder and genocide. really interesting to see how this deals with all of that in what is essentially a one-act play

There is a lot to be said about the beautiful way it's shot and the themes of post-WWII feeling around America, especially, in it's more rural parts but what intrigued me the most is how just one good man among a rotten bunch can inspire a change that turns the tides and creates hope for a better, less fearful world.

Lean, mean neo-Western pressure cooker that feels and plays like a '90s point-and-click adventure game, where lone drifter Spencer Tracy arrives by train in small dusty Black Rock in the months after WW2 had ended, in search of a Japanese man named Komoko. The local townsfolk, led by Robert Ryan, are suspicious of this newcomer — no one's been through Black Rock in years — and are hesitant to give answers... as if they're hiding something. Maybe they are? I guess you gotta watch to find out. What I can say is... this rocks. HARD.
