I love that we are getting adaptations of indie horror games. The big ones like silent hill, resident evil, until dawn etc are always cool to see but the smaller ones have as much potential as the rest. With exit 8 snd now the mortuary assistant I'm excited to see what's next.
The mortuary assistant was a game I never played but watched alot of videos of atvthe time it came out. It always looked cool and the premise was very interesting. The movie may not excecute the incorporation of the game play elements in perfectly like the exit 8 movie. That being said it still has that 2000s horror charm I like.
What I found very cool with the exit 8 adaptation was how it incorporated the game play into the story. It made you play along as you watch the movie. Mortuary assistant does it well enough in the 3rd act but before that it's more of a typical horror adaptation focusing on the scares, story and characters.
The story definitely feels done before. If I need to make a comparison it's like the autopsy of Jane doe with the possession of Hannah grace. I mean the story isn't the strongest point. It has a 2000s horror charm to it though. I always appreciate that. The ending is pretty good though.
There is a metaphor throughout with addiction. It's not the most subtle one but it helps especially regarding the ending. As addiction horror goes if you want better evil 2013 is top Notch but this movie does it fine. The ending sells it well and the last shot is cool. Nothing to saw your arm off to but still done entertainingly enough.
The characters are are all interesting enough. Willa Holland Is always nice to see (Thea queen from arrow). Her character is the highlight. Her backstory is interesting especially with the flashbacks with her father. The mortuary manager plays the creepy and mysterious off very well. Then there's the demon. It's a basic pale, naked and bald thing but serves its purpose. None of them are that complex but their entertaining enough.
The scares are fine. It's not the scariest one out there. It's got the jumpscares and fake outs which aren't bad but fakeouts tend to go on for longer than needed. Their fine is all I can say.
So all and all the mortuary assistant is an entertaining movie. Willa Holland and her character Is the highlight. I liked it and had a good time.
