“Good sex isn’t dumb or cheap, like the sex in porn.”
This may be one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. It doesn’t rely on fancy camera work, impressive casting, or even a revolutionary soundtrack just to make it good. One scene in this film that really stuck out to me was when he was discussing the porn she watches as she held the knife up in defense. “No one really gets fucked in the films you rent, there’s no penetration.” I think him pointing out the very clear lack of penetration in her taste sets the mood for her view on sex as a whole. At points it was very cringey and quite hard to watch but overall it just showed how disconnected the woman was from those around her. I thought the scene of them finally kissing, and him getting a boner was really impactful as well. Her instant turn from comfortability to shame at the sight of his arousal was so relatable and heavy to watch. I also really enjoyed the concept of her allowing him to observe her in her most intimate moments, when she was watching porn. She found it as a way to escape and reclaim her trauma and he just wanted to see the process in a nonsexual manner. I absolutely loved the character of the woman, I found her extremely relatable and deep. (She is me!) I could say a million more things about this film but none of them will truly be able to fully express how impactful it was. Highly recommend to my sexually repressed and or traumatized baddies!
