At work, we started an Office Movie Club, where we all watch one film chosen by a different coworker weekly and have a discussion at the end of that week. This past week, we watched the documentary Cocaine Cowboys (oddly enough quite relevant for our line of work in AODA). The film, directed by Billy Corben, depicts the rise of cocaine in Miami, Florida and the crime spree that followed it during the 1970s and 1980s. I thought this was a very well made documentary that seemed to provide a thorough perspective of the illegal drug trade by including news footage and interviews with the drug smugglers, law enforcement, gang members, lawyers, etc.
Cocaine Cowboys was a very interesting watch and definitely recommend it. Watch the trailer here. It revealed quite a few things about Miami in this era that I did not know:
-This was an insanely bloody and violent time in Miami’s history - Miami Vice ain’t got nothing on what really happened!
-No one seemed to have been able to get out while there were ahead. I mean, once you start burying bags of money in your lawn, you might want to stop and think… hmm, maybe this is plenty enough that I can retire. Whether you are able to get out of the game (alive) is another story.
-It’s crazy that Miami would not be what it is today, particularly it’s expansive skyline, without the illegal drug trade.
-Also, Mickey Munday was a bad ass! A mix between McGyver and Crocodile Dundee!
-I’m interested in watching Cocaine Cowboys 2 that supposedly focuses on The Godmother - who in my professional opinion is a psychopath. [Note: I have no actual professional certification or degree in psychology.]
