Week 4: ******Shot in CinemaScope

My introduction to Samuel Fuller is a fantastic subversion of not just the macho archetype often utilized in this genre but also the inherent evilness of the outlaw with Barbara Stanwyck heading the story in a powerful and domineering lead role. I’ve only seen her in five movies to this point but out of those five I’d say I liked her the most here and I sincerely hope she had more roles like this, not necessarily western roles but roles with this much power as she was truly amazing here. It’s also a brilliantly written drama on top of the subversion and great lead, it’s a cynical and emotional story about two strong-willed characters falling in love while the lives they’re accustomed to crumble around them, that impressive writing and story creation is far from where Samuel Fuller’s brilliance ends though. His direction is electric and makes for impressive moments of tension while also bringing out every theme to the emotional forefront, it’s hard to not immediately bring up the visuals too which may have been my favorite thing about the whole movie. The stunning landscape shots, the amazing town set, the lighting, and the use of close-ups to play off the wider scope often utilized, I fell in love with the inventiveness of the camera work instantly and it never let up through the end screen, big props to both Fuller and Joseph Biroc for bringing this gorgeous story to life through the equally gorgeous cinematography. Paired with said gorgeous cinematography is an amazing score composed by Harry Sukman who also wrote the fantastic theme song with Harold Adamson, the music worked so well to bring out the emotion, everything about this worked so well together like a symphony of technical brilliance which is always one of my favorite things to see in a movie. Next to Stanwyck I think there were two main standouts, obviously Barry Sullivan in the co-lead as Griff Bonnell who had great chemistry with Barbara and the second is Eve Brent who could’ve used more screen-time as I was really enjoying her character. I’m so glad I’ve now finally gotten a foot into Samuel Fuller’s filmography and I’m even happier I loved my introductory watch as much as I thought I might, I’ll definitely be seeing more of his work this year and I now couldn’t be more excited to do so.**

really fun if not a tiny bit confusing at times. took me about half the movie to be able to tell the main brothers apart unless they were both on screen. 

the general from white christmas is here and he’s a lil bitch this time! the duality of man!!

what a fucking TONAL SHIFT between that scene and the IMMEDIATE jangly music-ed bathtub scene jfc

and ofc barbara stanwyck kicks ass as usual duh
