this film is absolutely insane and untouchable in some aspects, and is bad or mediocre in other aspects. the first 10 minutes of this (the cityscape intro) absolutely draws you in with some of my favorite animation and soundtrack combinations ever — a cyberpunk enthusiats wet dream. jungleish/primal beats work so well with oppresive digital city. the movie feels ethereal at some points, and it does well when its combing intresting visuals with intresting sound e.g. the toys dancing scene in the hospital/bedroom or whatever. that said the plot itself is just long and confusing. maybe its genius and i just didnt get it, but i remember waiting for it too finally be over

Akira has that cyberpunk vibe, full of incredible action and brutality, thrilling from beginning to end, and rich in themes. What more could I ask for in a movie? It’s amongst the best anime ever produced.

The animation is amazing! The action, the mystic elements, score, are all genuinely epic. Everyone, anime fan or not, should watch Akira at least once in their lifetime since it is a truly an exceptional work of art.
