Cold Hearts

I heard about this movie a long time ago. How long ago? When it was getting made, in the days of dialup internet. It intrigued me because of how much I was getting into horror at the time and well, mostly really because of Amy Jo Johnson.  But never heard about it getting released and for years I wondered if I ever would see it. Even in the days of streaming I couldn’t find it. Finally I find a dvd on Amazon which is reasonably priced so I bit the bullet and bought it. Was it worth the 25 year wait? I’d say… yes

Very much the post Scream era’s version of The Lost Boys, and while that movie was very 80s this is very late 90s and I kinda love it for that. Guess I’m just nostalgic for that era being when I got into the genre and my younger days as well. In a way it does play out more of a drama with vampires than a full out horror movie but eventually you do get some good horror parts, mostly towards the end. But I really did enjoy these characters, especially Amy (she’s featured on the posters front and center but she’s not the main character). 

Going back to the ending, that was kind of the low point. At the climax there is a reveal which is cool but… pretty much it’s over just like that. I really wanted to see more especially more gore (you got Tom Savini working on this! Go crazy!). It almost seems like the director was setting up for a sequel especially with a little blurb in the ending credits that the characters will return but well we see how that turned out. 

But either way it still was much better than I expected, especially with most ratings and reviews I see. It’s a three star at best, but it’s one of those three star movies I really feel like I could watch more than once. If you want to check it out, legally at least, there should be some copies left on Amazon, maybe on other sites like EBay. There is a free version on YouTube at the time of this review but it’s in Spanish I think. Other than that, I can’t help too much. Hopefully someday some streaming service like Tubi can pick it up, or maybe someone like Arrow or Scream Factory can get the rights, I say it deserves a chance and not to be in this much obscurity.

Oh and man, of all the most random music choices, I never thought I’d hear Denis Leary’s Asshole in a movie like this 😂
