I miss this type of early and mid 2000s “historical” film. Is there any historical truth to them? I don’t know, and frankly, I don’t think it matters that much. The creativity and vision that went into the art direction, the sets, and the costumes are absolutely outstanding.

The plot is great too. This kind of court intrigue is now mostly associated with Game of Thrones, but Curse of the Golden Flower can absolutely be considered a predecessor. If I had to sum up the story, it would be: “rules for thee, but not for me.”

Also, I can’t help but feel that if Empress Phoenix had a daughter, she wouldn’t be as useless as her sons (but that’s pure speculation on my part).

This movie looks beautiful. The sets are amazingly colorful. However these beauty can’t really hide the fact that this movie takes nearly an hour to get going. And when that happens your really confused, who’s against who, who has wich power and army and especially we’re all these troops come from. Also as this movie doesn’t achieve go give you any connection to characters and doesn’t portray any motive, so your not really rooting for anybody. But the beautiful costumes and awesome action kinda make up for that.

Yimou feels like a very different director at this time, but one thing is sure, he knows his visuals!I thought this would feel to "Hollywood" having watched 'The Great Wall', but was I wrong!'Curse of the Golden Flower' is stunning; overflowing with color, extravagant clothing, and fantasy-like set design.The action is so cool and over the top.The soundtrack is pretty epic at times too.the story is pretty good and feels like a tragic play, but there was things about it I did not get or catch on to (might just be me), and it was a somewhat slow start, though very beautiful.
