Enjoyed for a similar reason to The Professor and the Madman which I just caught, it’s a telling of a period of intellectual history with some solid leads, this one’s just slightly rougher around the edges but still works about as well as I was wanting. It’s definitely got a hallmark-y feel to it with the usage of scientific history, it’s not prolific or insightful in any way, the surface-level dive into the science leaves me with a mostly surface-level enjoyment but considering that’s what I was expecting going in I’m far from mad about it. Andy Serkis is a lot of fun as Einstein and I always love seeing Jim Broadbent but my standout here was easily David Tennant, with me only knowing him as Barty Crouch Jr. seeing him play this closeted religious scientist was very impressive and a lot of fun. The script and overall story is as surface level as the science, like I said it’s not groundbreaking there but it’s not with the dialogue either, the romance subplots with Einstein were also entirely unnecessary and could’ve easily been tossed. Despite my problems I still had a good time and I could honestly see myself throwing this on again some time in the future, I just think we need more science history movies because even the mediocre ones warm my heart.
