❝It happened. There's no avoiding it. No forgetting.❞

Speak is one of my comfort books, and the film adaptation is just as good.
Kristen Stewart is an awesome actress and her portrayal of Melinda is an example of this: she perfectly captured the quiet emptiness that slowly gave way to brewing conflict within Melinda. Her facial expressions are so minute and detailed, and the scene where she shows Mr. Freeman her closet makes me cry every time I see the joy on her face contrasting with his. The only tiny thing is I'd have liked to see more of Melinda's dry humour as that made her such a real character in the book, but considering the run-time the writing is great. Steve Zahn is a treasure and I loved his performance as Mr. Freeman; I wish there was more about him in the film. Dave Petrakis (played by Michael Angarano) is also my hero.
Just like the book, the film artfully navigates the trauma caused by sexual assault and the lasting impact it has on victims. There is no over-the-top editing or writing, and the high school setting combined with authentic characters makes this film simultaneously an easy and difficult experience. I thoroughly encourage everyone to watch Speak, and to listen.
