To paraphrase a conversation.
Friend: "I believe 'The Voyage Home' is a good place to start if you don't have time for the shows."
Me: "Why not The Motion Picture?"
Friend: "You'll want to die."
Me: "Oh."On one hand, this is a movie that's filled with interesting concepts that could lead to fascinating discussions about life and the theory of human exploration. On the other hand, it's a slog to get through, and it ultimately dilutes any urge I had to have a conversation.
This movie is certainly ambitious. I do respect them gearing more towards a '2001: A Space Odyssey' approach than the recently released 'Star Wars'. They tried to do their own thing, and if they had tweaked it a bit more, it would have been a fascinating exploration. I did watch the theatrical cut, and I've heard the director's edition helps this movie. I hope so.
I do have to admit that I am extremely unfamiliar with 'Star Trek'; I'm already judging myself, don't worry (I'm planning on watching all the movies up until Voyage Home, and then watching the shows after I finish 'Community'). I appreciated this movie, but I couldn't get much out of it. The effects are goofy, but fun; the actors are great; the stakes do feel high; and the main plot kept my interest throughout.
Despite that, I do feel that many scenes feel overlong, and some parts feel over-explanatory; you could cut so many continuous shots from this movie.
When I go through Trek, I will definitely watch the director's cut. In this moment, I'm an ancy mess.
