Vantablack in its humour and commentary on society's obsession with serial killers, but also surprisingly quirky and downright silly at times (the inspector's cat talking him out of suicide as his tie is around his neck ready to leap off his dining room table really showcases the darkly surrealist comical balancing act that Slobodan Šijan and company are working with here). Strangler vs Strangler reminds me a lot of The Day of the Beast in that they're both nocturnal odysseys that play horror for laughs, are heavily ingrained in certain music subcultures (the Yugoslavian New Wave of... New Wave and the extreme metal scene of Madrid, respectively) and, strangely enough, act as love(?) letters to the cities they take place in. The stark and expressionist cinematography aid in making this one horrifying trip, with our lead Strangler appearing extra grotesque in the night scenes. A deliriously fucked up slasher adventure through '80s New Wave Belgrade that aims to shock and delight viewers by revelling (and never relenting) in the morbidity of its subject matter. Content warnings abound.
