This was my pick for ‘Funny Film Friday’ and I hadn’t seen it in years; decades even, and I’d lost counts of how many times I’d seen it. So I was a bit hesitant how it would hold up and it was my mates first time watching it, or even hearing about it.
It did not disappoint, and we have already quoted a few lines used the “I’m blackety black, y’all” gif already, a standout moment from Allen Payne.
The spoof on NWA’s rise to power leaves you with belly aches. From Gusto’s opening lines to ‘Straight Outta Low Cash’ and ‘Sweat from my Balls’ to Allen Payne’s Gay Chat and his aforementioned “I’m blackety black, y’all”. CB4 is as great a to the rap game, as Spinal Tap is for rock music. And it really holds its own, and should be considered in the top 10 mockumentries of all time; a film criminally overlooked and forgotten film.
The surprising thing is, that it was directed by a 31yo white woman born in Cali, US, who just happens to be married the Beatie Boys’ Mike D. She also created the great stoner comedy ‘Half Baked’.
Rock is superb as Albert Brown aka MC Gusto and I would say it is a career best for Payne, but Deezer D is the trio’s weakest link; although has the great rapper moniker of Stab Master Arson. Charlie Murphy is a lot of fun as Gusto whose identity is stolen by Albert, leading to some funny encounters.
Revisiting this has cemented it my mind as a classic and one I shan’t leave such a long time to watch again.
